Young skin is smooth and elastic because it contains large amounts of hyaluronic acid (HA). As we age, the amount of HA in the skin gradually diminishes resulting in the skin becoming dryer, thinner, and more wrinkled. HA fillers are a long lasting, but not permanent form of HA. The gel mimics the naturally occurring substance in our bodies. When injected under the surface of the skin, the gel restores volume and provides a rejuvenated look and feel.
Dr. Radke uses high quality cosmetic hyaluronic acid products called Juvederm and Belotero. Different products within the Juvederm and Belotero lines are used for specific areas of the face. The product best suited for one area of the face may not be the same as another area.
No, HA fillers are not permanent.
Results can be seen immediately with full results achieved at 14 days.
HA filler dissolves naturally with time, and will eventually totally disappear from the body. How long a HA filler treatment lasts is very individualized, depending on many factors such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age, metabolism, and location being treated. Certain products may last longer than others. The results will last approximately 6-18 months. Typically, about 50-80% of the effect remains after 6 months. The injected material will gradually disappear until your skin looks just as it did prior to treatment. You can repeat the treatment whenever you feel the need depending on the results you are looking for.
There is a medication called hyaluronidase which can be administered to assist in dissolving the filler if required.
The treatment typically takes 15-45 minutes, depending on the areas treated and the the number of syringes used. Filler is injected with a very thin needle into areas of concern. Results are typically immediate with further improvement over the next few weeks.
Most people are able to return to their normal daily routines immediately afterwards.
Most patients find the discomfort involved in the procedure to be minimal and well tolerated. Prior to treatment, Dr. Radke applies a very good topical numbing cream which takes about 15 minutes to take effect and allows for the injections to be much more comfortable. In addition, Juvederm and Belotero are available with freezing (lidocaine) mixed in with the hyaluronic acid to further reduce the discomfort associated with the procedure.
Everyone responds differently to filler injections and factors such as bleeding tendency, area being treated, injection technique and injector expertise can influence outcomes so it is difficult to predict exactly how you will respond. It is therefore extremely important to choose an expert injector who has the appropriate knowledge, skill and expertise to reduce risks of complications and provide you with the best possible results.
Some of the most common side effects of HA fillers, that typically last for less than a week, include swelling, redness, mild discomfort and tenderness at the site of treatment. We also recommend not having filler injections within 14 days of an important event (including air travel) as patients are more likely to experience bruising and swelling during that time.
Dermal fillers can not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
